Angouleme Comics Festival is the most important comics festival in Europe. One of the features is a 24 hour competition: that is, to draw a 24-page completed comic in 24 hours. This year's winner of the competition is French artist Boulet (although he took 26 hours to complete his entry), with the story of a regular guy whose new roommate is a little... different. It's pretty funny.

The tale of Vampires in Havana

Released in 1985, this Cuban animated film tells the story of young Pepe, whose uncle, Wolfgang Amadeus von Dracula, has invented a potion that allows vampires to go out in the day. However, it has one inconvenient side effect: take enough of it and the vampire becomes human. Throw into the mix a general with a young and lusty wife, two opposing groups of vampires who want the potion for different reasons, and you've got a charming little movie. Bonus: trumpet music by Arturo Sandoval, one of the great Cuban trumpeters.

This is a terrific book, definitely deserving of its accolades (Governor General's Award, Rogers' Writers Awards, Amazon's #1 Book of 2011).

The Sisters brothers are Eli and Charlie -Eli, the younger brother, narrates the story- notorious killer henchmen for a mysterious robber baron called the Commodore, at the height of the California gold rush. They've been sent to kill Hermann Warm, a genius inventor who's come up with a formula that will make panning for gold, an arduous process, obsolete, but he's refused to sell it to the Commodore. Along the way to San Francisco, stuff... happens, and the brothers begin to rethink their way of life.

A little bit Elmore Leonard, a little bit Damon Runyon, the book has moments of violence (graphic but never gratuitous)and ferocious humour; highly recommended.
